The Kern County Oral Language Festival gives students in grades 4–8 the opportunity to memorize and present their interpretation of a published literary work by a known author. Presentations are 3–5 minutes in length, with grades 4–6 and grades 7–8 competing separately. Competition categories include Verse Choir, Humorous Interpretation Solo and Duo, and Serious Interpretation Solo and Duo.

New for 2027! The festival is expanding to include a Spanish Oral Language Festival, giving students the opportunity to showcase their oral interpretation and performance skills in Spanish.
