Our Services
The Kern County Superintendent of Schools, support and assessment team consists of over 80 certificated and classified professionals. These individuals provide assessments and related services to programs operated by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, 47 member school districts as well as Kern High School District, Bakersfield City School District and Sierra Sands SELPA. Districts and SELPAs may access these highly specialized services by making a request through the Kern SELPA Search and Serve process. These services include but are not limited to adaptive physical education, audiological services, itinerant deaf and hard of hearing services, occupational therapy, orientation and mobility services, specialized orthopedic services, speech therapy services and specialized vision services.

Adapted Physical Education teachers provide services to pupils who have needs that cannot be adequately satisfied in general, modified general or specially designed physical education programs.
The county office has the only four pediatric Audiologists in Kern County. Our audiologists provide assessments of acuity of hearing and monitor amplification devices.
Our Itinerant Deaf and Hard of hearing teachers provide services to children with hearing impairment. These services include; adapting curricula, methods, and the learning environment; and special consultation to students, parents, teachers, and other school personnel.
Occupational Therapy (OT) includes services to improve student’s educational performance, postural stability, self-help abilities, sensory processing and organization, motor planning and coordination, visual perception and integration, and fine motor abilities.
Our Orientation and Mobility Specialist’s assist students with identified visual impairments. The students are taught about body awareness and to understand how to navigate their environment.
Teachers for the orthopedically impaired provide specially designed instruction related to the unique needs of students with orthopedic disabilities, including specialized materials and equipment.
Language and speech services provide remedial intervention for students with difficulty understanding or using spoken language. The difficulty may result from problems with articulation, abnormal voice, fluency and difficulty acquiring expressive and receptive language.
Services for the visually impaired includes assessment of functional vision and curriculum modifications necessary to meet the student’s educational needs.
These are health services prescribed by the child’s licensed physician and require medically related training of the individual who performs the services and which are necessary during the school day to enable the child to attend school. These services also include health issues that require nursing intervention beyond basic school health services. Services include managing the health problem, consulting with staff, group and individual counseling, making appropriate referrals, and maintaining communication with agencies and health care providers.
