Academic Decathlon Results Announced

Students from Arvin High’s Academic Decathlon team participate in the event’s Super Quiz on Feb. 1, 2020.

 

Stockdale High School received the Milo Hall Award as the overall team winner of the 39th annual Kern County Academic Decathlon held on Feb. 1, 2020 at Mira Monte High School. Nearly 200 students from 14 high schools participated. Stockdale will represent Kern County in the California Academic Decathlon scheduled for next month in Sacramento.

Rounding out the top ten teams were:

Second place — Frontier High School
Third place — Arvin High School
Fourth place — Bakersfield High School
Fifth place — West High School
Sixth place — Wasco High School
Seventh place — Foothill High School
Eighth place — California City High School
Ninth place — Independence High School
Tenth place — Cesar E. Chavez High School

Each school’s team consisted of a maximum of nine students: three “A” (honor), three “B” (scholastic) and three “C” (varsity) entrants. They competed against other students in the same divisions. The team compiling the most points captured first place. Individual medals were also awarded to first, second and third place finishers in each category and division.

The Academic Decathlon is made up of 10 events including Art, Economics, Essay, Interview, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Science and Speech.

A Super Quiz is also conducted. It’s a pressure-packed 90-minutes of excitement, run like a TV quiz show. Teams have seven seconds to answer each question. Running totals are displayed on large, visible flip cards, bringing about enthusiastic reactions from the audience. Stockdale High School won the Super Quiz.

Overall individual top scores in this year’s Academic Decathlon went to:

Honors Division

1st place — Nicole Chang, Stockdale High School
2nd place — Emma Fox, Stockdale High School
3rd place — Chelsea Paylaga, Frontier High School

Scholastic Division

1st place — Keaton Wainer, Stockdale High School
2nd place — Erik Ramirez, Stockdale High School
3rd place — Robert Lozano, Frontier High School

Varsity Division

1st place — Harley Huggins, Frontier High School
2nd place — William Brown, Bakersfield High School
3rd place — Robert Marentes, Stockdale High School
