Bus driver at the wheel

The following is a list of procedures a potential trainee must go through to obtain a school bus driver’s certificate:

  1. Minimum requirements: 18 years
  2. 20 hours of classroom instruction (minimum) with a state certified instructor.
  3. Physical examination (DOT) with drug and alcohol screening
  4. After classroom completion, obtain a California Commercials learners permit upon successfully passing the General Knowledge test, Passenger endorsement, School Bus endorsement, and Air Brake endorsement through the DMV.
  5. CHP Interview, fingerprinting, background check and submit a current Department of Motor Vehicle “Driver History Report” ($57 cash to CHP)
  6. CHP Written exam on rules and regulations and first aid
  7. District sponsorship and behind-the-wheel training; 20 hours minimum.
  8. Successfully complete and pass the CHP Behind-the-Wheel drive test.
  9. A temporary certificate is issued after a successful drive test.
  10. Proof submitted to DMV upon successful completion.
