The California State Board of Education adopts instructional materials for Kindergarten to Grade Eight. These materials align to the California English-Language Arts Content Standards. At the high school level, instructional materials are adopted at the local level, with the district board of education certifying that the materials align to the standards.

The standards represent a strong consensus on the skills, knowledge, and abilities that all students should be able to master in language arts at each grade level in the California public school system in order to be college and/or career ready upon graduation from Grade 12.
