First-ever local conference geared toward parents of children with special needs slated for Friday, January 29
The Kern County Consortium SELPA, a division of the Kern County Superintendent of Schools office, will host a first-of-its-kind, all-day conference geared toward parents of children with special needs on Friday, Jan. 29 at Hodel’s Country Dining, 5917 Knudsen Dr. in Bakersfield. Admission is just $10, which includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
The conference, titled “Specially Yours,” is being organized to educate and empower parents who are struggling to meet the needs of their complex families.
“There are very few local training opportunities geared specifically to parents about issues that may impact their special needs children,” said SELPA coordinator Troy Tickle. “We want to provide parents with the means to learn from an industry expert and network with other parents and local service organization.”
Dr. Patrick Friman — a nationally recognized speaker, clinical professor and director of clinical services at Father Flanagan’s Boys’ Home (Boys Town) — will lead two workshops during the conferences. The first is entitled “The Ten Laws of Childhood” and will focus on redefining what is “normal.”
“Often, parents with special needs children feel like they have lost out on the normal parenting experience,” Tickle said. “Dr. Friman will help parents realize they simply have to redefine what normal is.”
The second workshop will cover how parents can cope with their child’s anxiety at home and school through a variety of tools and strategies.
In addition to the vast knowledge parents will take away from engaging with Dr. Friman, the conference will be an ideal networking opportunity wherein parents can meet and mingle amongst vendors whose missions are to serve children with special needs.
“Many, many parents report that they are unaware of all the services in our community that they have access to outside of the schools,” Tickle said. “We hope this is an opportunity to correct that problem.”
