The annual Kern County Teachers of the Year Awards Reception, presented by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, will be held on May 1 from 4:30-6 p.m. at the Bakersfield Museum of Art, 1930 R Street in Bakersfield.
Two of dozens nominated will be honored as Kern County Teachers of the Year. Those two and one alternate, who will be announced at the ceremony, will represent Kern County in the California Teacher of the Year competition that announces its winner in November.
The California Teacher of the Year program is sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE) and highlights educational innovation, student learning and the rewards of teaching, as well as attracting public attention to the positive aspects of the California educational system. According to CDE guidelines, the intent of the program is to:
• Identify and honor outstanding teachers throughout California;
• Select five articulate teachers to serve as California Teachers of the Year for 2013 who will represent the state’s teachers and stand for the positive contributions of the teaching profession;
• Focus public attention on the positive accomplishments of California teachers and students;
• Identify one teacher for competition in the National Teacher of the Year Program.

Judy Reynaga West, a kindergarten teacher at Richland School District’s Sequoia Elementary School and Erick Casallas, a reading and English Language Development (ELD) teacher at Bakersfield City School District’s Emerson Middle School were last year's (2011) Kern County Teachers of the Year.
